Radville - Canadian Western Agribition held the RBC Beef Challenge Supreme on Saturday, November 29th in Regina. The unusual warm weather kept the attendance rising during the week.
The RBC Beef Challenge Supreme is a show designed to select the best cattle in the country. Five elite judges are chosen from across Canada to decide the champions at this premier show. Cattle are eligible to compete in the Supreme if they have won Grand Champion at Agribition in their breed earlier in the week or won Grand Champion or Supreme Champion at other designated shows throughout the show season.
Saturday started with a lot of excitement in the air. There was a steady hum from the crowd that was packed into the Stadium to watch the Supreme. The females were paraded in first and judged, then followed by the bulls. All of the animals were brought into the arena for the finale. A few hoots and hollers escaped the eager crowd as their friends, family or crew made the top ten. The top ten animals were pulled out of the line up and displayed in the center of the arena. This was the big moment everyone had been waiting for. The lights were dimmed, the music was set and the crowd was waiting. The judges delivered a quick speech before naming their champions. The crowd was on pins and needles awaiting the results. The judge walked down the line of bulls drawing out the intensity and with a quick turn slapped the champion bull. The crowd roared with applause. The 2008 RBC Beef Challenge Supreme Champion Bull is Soo Line Yellowstone 6344, owned by Soo Line Cattle Company of Midale, Sask.
Winning Supreme was a great honour and the perfect ending to a great year for Soo Line Cattle Company. Earlier in the week Soo Line won Grand Champion Black Angus Bull with Soo Line Yellowstone 6344 as well as Grand Champion Black Angus Female with Soo Line Annie K 6271. It has been 34 years since the same breeder achieved winning both female and bull categories in the Angus breed. Soo Line Annie K 6271 was also the 2007 Heartland First Lady Classic Champion. It is the first time in seven years that the First Lady Champion has come back to Agribition to been shown as a two year old. Annie also made the top ten in the RBC Beef Challenge Supreme. Another highlight to the year was Red Soo Line Momentum 7051 winning the Canadian National Red Angus Champion Bull at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair. With all these accomplishments, Soo Line Cattle Company was voted by their peers as the 2008 Saskatchewan Angus Breeder of the Year.
Soo Line Cattle Company currently runs approximately nine hundred head of cows. One half are purebred red and black angus, the other half are commercial angus based cows. Soo Line Cattle Company is located at Midale with the majority of its pasture at the Radville ranch.
Soo Line Cattle Company is owned by Roger and Michelle Hardy, along with their children Sean, Liam and Bridget. Soo Line Cattle Company has four employees: Blake MacMillan (Ranch Operations Manager), and his wife Heidi; Justin Morrison (Purebred Operations Manager), and his fiancÉ Tawnie Wolter; Alistair Burnett, Herdsmen; Adam Carlson (Herdsmen), and his wife Glynis.
Soo Line Cattle Company has two annual sales. The On Track Bull Sale will take place on the ranch Thursday, March 26, 2009 and a Female sale in October 2009.
