Ceylon - On a cold, snowy January 8, 2009 Border Line Feeders Inc had the privilege of hosting a seminar on Safe Cattle Handling for approximately 45 interested people. The seminar was presented by Reg Steward who is a rancher himself and also the BC Provincial Ranching Consultant to the Farm and Ranch Safety and Health Association (FARSHA).
The day began at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts that were donated by the Radius Credit Union. At 10:00 a.m. Reg Steward started the seminar with an in-class tutorial. He taught the attendees more effective methods of moving and handling cattle that result in a more manageable herd and increased safety of the handler. His methods also tend to put less stress on the animals and as a result will reduce the shrinkage during shipping. During his tutorial he used different techniques to illustrate his various ideas.
At noon everyone was treated to a delicious beef lunch that had been sponsored by Elanco Animal Health. There were also door prizes that were handed out at that time.
After lunch, despite the snowy day, everyone headed out to the pens. In the pens Reg and the Border Line employees demonstrated the techniques that had been taught during the morning session. Seeing his ideas actually put into practice certainly helped reaffirm the morning's teachings.
Everyone that attended agreed that they had learned a lot and that the seminar had been very informative and well presented.
