Radville, SK -
The first fundraiser for a new swimming pool was held Thursday, June 25th at the gazebo in Radville-Laurier Regional Park. Rain fell in the early evening, threatening the success of the event, and organizers debated whether or not to cancel it. But luckily the skies cleared at about 8:00 p.m., and it ended up being a beautiful evening, though unfortunately the mosquitos turned up in droves for the show as well. Many people called into the Rec Centre to be sure the event was still going on. About 75 people, 50 of them kids, showed up at the park to take in the movie, "Hotel for Dogs". The show started at 10:00 p.m., but unfortunately was cut short at midnight when the ending got cut off due to a malfunction with the DVD.
There was a line at the concession all night as the movie-goers bought slushies, popcorn, hot dogs, pop, water, licorice, candy bags and glow sticks.
The door prizes were donated by Pharmasave, and the winners were: Devin Pratt - Pirates of the Caribbean toy set, Abby Pratt - Tiner Bell figurine and perfume set, Makara Bourassa - Tinker Bell figurine set.
The movie projector was donated by Southeastern Computer Solutions (Weyburn), and the sound system was donated, set up and manned all night by Cleo from Music Craft (Weyburn).
The Radville Co-op donated the glow sticks, and S&E Grocery donated the weiners and water.
All in all it was a very successful night, bringing in approximately $850 for the new pool. This was the first of what will be many more fundraisers for the new pool. These fundraisers cannot get off the ground without the help and support of the community. It was a great way to spend the evening of the last day of school! Rec Director Janelle Fettes hopes to have another Movie Night in the summer or fall.
