On Sunday March 20th Cory and Rory from the Star Phoenix were in Bengough to taste test our Rink Burgers.
After reading about the “Best Rink Burger” competition sponsored by the Regina Leader Post and Saskatoon Star Phoenix, Larry Leflar and Deb Ashby got together and sent in a submission on behalf of the Bengough Rink and Curling Burger. Below is their submission:
The Making of the Big Muddy Rink Burger
My youth was spent roaming the rolling hills of the Big Muddy Valley, along with the deer, antelope and the occasional elk or moose. My father was a magnificent Black Angus Bull called Ferdenand, my mother was a beautiful blonde Gelbvieh Heifer called Genievieve. In November I made the mistake of roaming through the ranch of Gary and Sharon Barrett, home of the Big Muddy Chop Shop which is nestled in a valley 7 miles northeast of Big Beaver, Saskatchewan. I got mixed up with Christie Cracker, Country Morning Egg, Running Spring Water and Little Black Pepper. Myself along with 3000 of my siblings were transported to the Bengough Skating Rink and Curling Rink where we were fried, then dressed in mustard, ketchup, relish, onions and topped with a cheese slice, tomato and lettuce. We were then placed in a deliciously buttered bun only to be consumed by a bunch of wanna be Amber Holland’s and Jordan Eberle’s. Over a period of two - three day bonspiels and one Atom Hockey tournament all 2999 of my siblings were consumed——-I was the only one who survived until I met Cory the hungry news man who devoured me in a matter of seconds.
NOTE: All of the beef that make up the Big Muddy Burgers is donated by local farmers and ranchers. The butchering, deboning, grinding and mixing is done at the Big Muddy Chop Shop which is a government inspected facility. To keep the costs of processing down we have many curling and skating volunteers who help out with the labour. Thanks to the generosity of Gary and Sharon for the use of their facility, to the many volunteer hands who help out with the making of the burgers and to the generosity of the local farmers and ranchers we hope to keep our rinks operating for our citizens now and in the future.
