Milestone -
Milestone School has taken on the appearance of an Olympic Village. Each class has adopted and researched one of the countries participating in the Olympics. Bulletin Boards and doors have been decorated and are full of information on each of the countries. Art work has been displayed.
A "kick off to the Olympics" Assembly was held on February 11th with a flag bearer accompanying the torch holder performing the torch run in our gymnasium. Amber Hack, who participated in the Olympic Torch Run at Fort Qu'Appelle, lent her torch and running outfit to us, which added a true Olympic touch to our event.
After all countries completed their run, a number of excellent "Olympic Spirit" videos were shown along with student presentations. The Olympic spirit was felt throughout the gym. Pictures with each class together with the country flag and the Olympic torch were taken; Olympic cookies shared; and draws made for Olympic mitts completed the event.
The Olympic celebration will continue in parallel with the Olympics in Vancouver. Announcements on country information will occur daily; Olympic events are planned for each noon hour by our sports committee and SPARK program.
We'll all be watching the medal count. The Olympic celebrations promote academic learning, value education, cultural experiences along with physical activity. Even though each class will be rooting for their individual country, all will be hoping the Kindergarten Class's country will top the medal standings. Go, Canada!!
