A full slate of sixteen teams participated in the Curl for Cancer bonspiel held at the Oxbow Rink on Jan. 21.

Members of the Oil Wives Club of Oxbow organized the event.

The two teams with the best win/loss record and points scored for and against were Med Lamontagne, Brenda King, Brian Northeast and Leanne Weber; and Richard Lamontagne and his daughters Halynne, Joelle and Bryn. Every team played three games. The first two games were six ends, and the last was four ends. Some teams were comprised solely of family members, and many youngsters participated – some curling for the first time.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society – SE Unit and used for cancer research. The amount of money raised was not available at press time, but when the total is known it will be included in the Town and Country column.

While the focus was on curling, the Oil Wives also had a variety of games for children to play upstairs in the Lions Den. Cake walks, a ring toss game, a fish pond, and a facepainting station added much to the fun of the day.

The event concluded with a ham and scallop potato supper, and Chinese auction.

Curl for Cancer was one of the first fundraisers hosted by the Cancer Society more than 50 years ago. Many of the units within the province held these events. Today, Oxbow is the only community who still hosts a Curl for Cancer event in the province.
