Broadview School will be headed by a new principal in the 2012-13 academic year.

Current senior science and math teacher Doris Wyatt will fill the position of principal, vacated by Jesse Bradley.

It was recently announced that Bradley will be leaving Broadview School, where he has acted as teacher, principal and head football coach.

“I think Doris is going to be excellent,” said Bradley. “I hope she builds on what successes we’ve had here and just keepings growing the school, furthering the agenda and making it a better place for years to come.”

Wyatt was offered the principal position by Prairie Valley School Division on June 10, and accepted the offer on June 11.

Her initial response was one of mixed emotion she said, adding administration was something she wanted to do when she first began teaching but family life became priority.

“I kind of thought that (principal) opportunity was gone, so when it came up this time I first thought no and then I started thinking I might really wonder if I’d missed the opportunity,” said Wyatt, who has taught at Broadview School since 1988. “I enjoy teaching. I enjoy the students. I enjoy the staff. And moving into the principalship, I know I’m going to miss my time in the classroom.”

While there are a lot of differences between being a teacher and a principal, Bradley agreed the transition from classroom to administration is a quite leap.

“As a classroom teacher you really focus on your own class, whereas principal you need to focus on the entire school. That’s the biggest shift. Instead of just thinking of your little piece of the school, you’re thinking about its entirety.”

Wyatt said her priority- the students- will remain the same, and their achievement will be of utmost importance.

“I’m sure it will be a huge learning curve…but I know the community, I know the students, I know the staff. I feel comfortable going into it that way.”

While he’s sad to be leaving, Bradley said he wishes the best to Wyatt and Broadview School.

“It’s been an honour to be principal here,” he said. “I’m going to miss everything. I love the town of Broadview- the school, the staff and the students.”

Bradley will relocate to Regina with his fiancé, Shannon Bellows, later this summer and will become principal at Sedley School.
